Black Speculative Fiction Month is an annual celebration held in October to highlight and honor contributions by Black authors in science fiction, fantasy, horror, Afrofuturism, and alternate history.
As author M. Haynes explains on his Black Speculative Fiction Definitions page, it is "an umbrella term for speculative texts with an emphasis on the people and culture of the African Diaspora. It is referred to as "Black” and not African, African-American, Haitian, etc. to show that the label includes ALL people of the Diaspora and places their culture, experiences and THEM at the forefront of these imaginative works."
Featured authors include Octavia E. Butler, N. K. Jemisin, Nnedi Okorafor, P. Djeli Clark and Rivers Solomon. Find many of their works at the library!
